America’s first fully electric, emission-free passenger boats set sail for Niagara Falls
One of America’s most iconic tourist hotspots is about to get a green update.
Niagara Falls is preparing to replace its current Maid of the Mist boat with the launch of the first two fully electric, zero-emission passenger ships built in the United States.
The Maid of the Mist transports more than 1.6 million international tourists to the falls each year. The two new all-electric vessels will continue to take tourists to the heart of Niagara Falls, undisturbed by engine noise or exhaust fumes.
The batteries will be recharged for seven minutes after each trip up to 80% of their capacity, allowing maximum efficiency and range.

“It makes perfect sense for Maid of the Mist to be a global leader with the implementation of this green technology,” said Maid of the Mist Chairman Christopher M. Glynn. “The new ships will transport our guests to the base at Niagara Falls, one of the largest sources of clean hydroelectric power in the world.
The new integrated vessels are currently under construction by Burger Boat Company in Wisconsin. In mid-May, the boats will be transported to Niagara Falls and lowered to the Maid of the Mist dry dock and maintenance facilities for assembly. Once construction, launch and certification are complete, the new vessels will be commissioned in mid-September.
Maid of the Mist VI (1990) and Maid of the Mist VII (1997), will be phased out when the new ships begin to operate.

“The Maid of the Mist has been offering tours of the famous Niagara Falls waterfalls and the Niagara River Gorge for over a century, and has been an iconic tourist attraction in western New York State,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said at the initiative’s unveiling ceremony. “The new zero-emission boats will continue this proud tradition while continuing our efforts to make New York State a premier eco-friendly tourist destination. “
New York State Parks Acting Commissioner Erik Kulleseid said, “The Maid of the Mist has been a great partner at Niagara Falls State Park. These new ships provide a superior visitor experience while expanding the sustainable practices we need to adapt to protect the natural assets that draw visitors to Niagara Falls and state parks. “
